Torroella de Montgrí
It is said “l’Empordà” is a land of a freedom, a freedom that can be found in its landscape and its people. Often it’s hard to describe the feelings we get from certain places, the light and aromas that surround it, slowly finding their way into our memories.
It’s far from random why we want Torroella de Montgrí to be the home of Traveling Light. It all began with a feeling and developed into a “we can’t be anywhere else” sensation the more we learned about it.
Torroella allows you to get lost between its walls and narrow streets, inviting you to discover every inch of its corners. You can feel the landscape in its food and the taste of a genuine hospitality in its people. The culture in the town is way broader than would expect with 3 main museums dedicated to photography, painting and the cultural history of the Mediterranean.
Nevertheless, it’s 5 minutes away from the seaside, l’Estartit, it’s sister town. It hosts hundreds of people during summer willing to hike the coast, relax by the sea or dive into the best natural reserve in the western Mediterranean.
Getting There
We invite you to immerse yourself in between the greens and yellows of the fields, watching how the light swims within the mountains and then dives into the wild forests of the pine trees.
The travel is a part of the journey.
Accommodation
Staying in Torroella
Staying in town is our primary recommendation since everything is within walking distance. We have a list of options for all budgets and tastes:
- Fonda Mitjà – Rustic hotel full of charm in the heart of town
- Hotel GR92 – A more affordable option for those who love to be outdoors
- Hotel Palau Lo Mirador – First class service in a XIV century Palace
- Vila Bella – Cozy yet classy in the center of town
Also, we strongly recommend you to check out Airbnb, you can find a really nice apartment that will make you feel like you are a part of the village.
Tip: it’s best to email the hotels directly since booking.com can give you fake numbers sometimes!
Staying in L’Estartit
L’Estartit is the sister town of Torroella located 10 minutes away by car or bus, perfect for those who want to stay right by the beach. The Spanish coast has a special charm during the fall season; for us, the autumn skies often mean a completely clean, marble blue canvas left by the tramontana, the wind from the north that inspired generations of artists. If you have some extra days, stay by the coast or visit it on a sunny day; we promise you it will be worth it.
Being a coastal town, L’Estartit has a much wider variety of options for your stay, there are more than 60 or more options to choose from at booking.com. There is also a shuttle bus that connects both cities every hour.

Surroundings
There’s plenty of things to do in Costa Brava area, if you have the time, we strongly encourage you to take some extra days to explore the coast and all its surroundings.
If you could only do one thing, we highly recommend you take the time to reach Cadaqués, the hometown of Salvador Dalí. It really is worth every minute of the journey, not only for story behind it, but also for its landscape, streets, and sights.
On the way to Barcelona there is also the botanical gardens of Marimurtra, Jardins de Cap Roig and Santa Clotilde Garden. More examples of villages worth visiting along the coast are: Figueres, Girona, L’Escala, Pals, Calella de Palafrugell.
Hiking, wine tasting, boat rides, sky diving, you name it! There are so many options and with the mild weather of autumn you can still do everything outdoors.
